The Birding Chacala Program.
SPBO (San Pancho Bird Observatory) feels lucky to join forces with the Birding Chacala group.  Volunteers from each group unite to provide guided field experience to children in Chacala schools fostering knowledge and identification of resident and migrant bird species in their area.
The Birding Chacala group compiled educational materials and delivered them to teachers at Chacala Schools. Teachers have creatively used these materials to teach about birds, habitat and conservation in a blended theme with spelling, grammar, reading and math. Students from kindergarten to high school study about birds for a month before Luis, with the help of volunteers from SPBO, Birding Chacala and the school, conducted a field study with the students and their teachers.
Binoculars all around, these children were jubilant and engaged. A few children were gifted in spotting and locating birds by sound. They knew the jungle forest, but they learned details about it from the Birding Chacala and SPBO teams that captivated their attention and inspired their questions. A few of the older boys are perfect candidates for birding internships.
One little boy in the very large kindergarten group proudly assured us of his first-hand experience with birds…Roosters!
SPBO will return to this community to conduct more field studies and to include interested students in birding tours. Perhaps one day, a student from this class will
build a bird touring business for him or herself; perhaps another will go to college to study birds or conservation. We at SPBO are convinced this is entirely possible!

Chacala is a special place on the Riviera Nayarit

Diego and Bernardo are the young brother team using their combined skills as surfers and recent restaurant experience to come up with this new addition to the village. The decor is the fusion of art with surf themes, as well as a giant TV screen playing continuous amazing surfers in motion for your entertainment.

Chacala is a very small authentic Mexico town (pueblo) located on the Pacific coast of of the Mexican Riviera, also becoming widely known as the Riviera Nayarit. Beautiful Chacala is about one hour and forty five minutes from the Puerto Vallarta, which is where the closest International Airport is located. VIP Transportation is a great way to get taxi service to Chacala, with three different packages to choose from.  Some Chacala rentals also have their own services.

A small fishing and tourist village with certified clean beaches, Chacala is perfect for a quiet vacation. The Chacala beach is a lovely white sandy beach cove that is great for swimming and fishing off of the rocks at the end of the cove.
The Chacala Marina has a boat ramp available, however it is a good idea to scout it out first to view the water levels. The Panga boats docked there ferry surfers out to the waves, or also conduct private tours to beautiful private sandy beaches for a few hours where you lounge and swim to your hearts content, or perhaps some fishing, or whale watching.

As far as the Chacala surfing goes, the Panga boat will drop you off and pick you up later. Las Caletas is very unique, due to it’s natural and isolated location, with jungle surrounding a slightly rocky point and bay that is most easily accessed by panga. Surfing is huge in Chacala, and surfers come from all over to catch a wave at Las Caletas.  In fact, Many of my surfer friends say they love coming out here for some of the “best rides of your life!”

Chacala rentals are plentiful. Here are a few you may be interested in with great pricing. There are many different kinds of rentals throughout Chacala from Chacala Hotels   Chacala Bungalows and Chacala Private homes, for larger groups that have more personal privacy with your own pool and ocean front views.

For some great tasting food, the local fishermen bring the fresh catch of the day to the local beachfront restaurants. You can also go to the Marina and purchase your fresh catch of the day, shrimp, lobster and oysters in the mornings at the Chacala Marina.

Rotary International
The Chacala library that was built six years ago by Rotary US and Rotary International. Back in 1996, the community of Chacala didn’t understand how to run a community service library. There only public building was the fisherman’s cooperative, which is still there today. Both private individuals and Rotary Members, as well as North Americans have dedicated their time, energy and money to keep the doors open and programs evolving.
If you are a Rotarian, the meetings are every Wednesday in La Penita, which is only 20 minutes away from Chacala in La Penita.

There is also the largest Tianguis (market) on the Riviera Nayarit on Thursdays in La Penita for shopping galore!

Due to the fact that Chacala is a small, more private pueblo, it is perfect for an amazingly romantic vacation, or a family get-away!

Chacala, located on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico is undergoing some beautification and improvements as they are building a new Town Plaza!
While there was constant rumors regarding improvements, the proof is in seeing those bulldozers swing into action! The traditional main plaza (zocolo) that we see in every village seemed to have bypassed Chacala completely. Oh so sad. However, we are now watching a miracle take place as the addition of the SECOND plazita is now officially under construction! This new plaza has started being implemented this morning directly in front of the quaint stained glass church just off the beach. The plan is for flowers and greenery shading little bench areas as well as complete ¨pedestrian only¨ for the street that was once a thoroughfare. This will ensure yet another area for locals to congregate, wedding parties to loiter, music nights to be held, or just a nice area to sit and relax under the umbrella of the giant palms.

The expected completion date is set for one month from today, but we all know how that goes, so maybe wait to pack that picnic for a few months and come along, check it out and enjoy beautiful Chacala as the transformations enhance it even more! The first town square is more like a large walkway to the beach. This new addition will be fun!

Where is the world is this, but Chacala, although you might feel that you are in the midst of the Amazon or perhaps in Ireland during the summer (minus the palms, of course), and not on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico!
Almost like magic, and only part way through the summer, the rains that break the silence of the nights present us with amazing, vibrant and glistening green jungle. With the winters that bring the gradual descent of the foliage, we almost forget what’s laying in hiding, and in anticipation of the onslaught of humidity and rainfalls.

The Dry Jungle and Land Crab Theory
Chacala Mexico is surrounded by what is called a “dry jungle”. The characteristics that give this term refers to the ability to “hang in there” throughout a full 7 or 8 months without ever seeing a drop of rain! Suddenly, even after the first appearance of the first pings of rainfall, we are presented with a burst of green life desperate to show off it’s beauty and spread their vines as quickly as a movie in fast forward! Chacala is truly an amazing location as the ocean meets the amazing jungle, and its called the Riviera Nayarit!

So, now we return to the topic of the “land crab” theory. If you have pieced this together from the previous article, you will have answered the question of their purpose. These creatures work in aide of the jungles all summer long, forging millions of holes into the ground in order to capture all the water required to “see it through” the long, dry, rainless months ahead. This is why you will see these crabs working furiously and in packs of hundreds far into the jungle. “LAND CRABS” mark their place in the scheme of things, after all – like ‘em or not!!!

Mini volcanoes erupt on the beach in Chacala Mexico, located on the Riviera Nayarit, except they’re not spitting out LAVA, but LAND CRABS! Seems this is commonplace after the first rainfall of the season, before they grow in population and move inland. Love em or hate em, they are here for a reason and it’s not for their delicate edible flavor. In fact, they are not part of a dinner menu by anyone’s standards. Actually, it’s hard to determine that they have any flesh attached to those spindly claws. Their eyeballs appear to make up most of the picture and you will certainly get the STARE if you scare them, while they rear up at you in defiance. Sounds like something out of a “sci fi” movie? Well, that’s how it can seem in you are unfortunate enough to have them able to crawl into your house and get into everything, like menaces – especially the way they love to travel in packs! Alfred Hitchcock would have had a hay day with this concept.

I do recall on one occasion when a friend of mine was attending an “in town” party and had driven in from his jungle home in Chacala, where the population of land crabs can be in the thousands, making it impossible to drive through without a lot of crab homicide. Upon arrival, he announced that he had brought an appetizer. O good, we all exclaimed. What is it? Well, it’s crab dip, but you will have to scrape it from the tires on my car!!! Yuck! Everyone loves a joker! Sounds bad, conservation wise, but truly unavoidable due to the masses that take over the jungle areas nearby the sea.

What are the purpose of these land crabs?

So, I ask myself, “what exactly is their purpose?”  The Chacala locals could not provide me with answers, Google didn’t prove much, there just HAS to be some reason these guys come to visit every year. Being the curious sort, I continued my search until I finally came up with the answer. It makes sense!! They really do make up part of the whole system and we need to respect their role.

So, think about this…they only inhabit tropical jungle areas and only come out during the wet season and leave (hibernate) in the dry.  Can you guess what their purpose is?
